Challenges
The challenges are numerous. However, this memo will focus on three challenges, which are: Mode of Appointment of INEC Chairman and Commissioners, Pre-election and Post-election litigation and electoral offences prosecution.
- Mode of Appointment of INEC Chairman and Commissioners.
The mode of appointment of the Chairman and Commissioners plays a big role in determining the outcome of elections.
The appointment of the INEC Chairman and Commissioners is by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This leads to partisan of the Chairman and Commissioners to the president and party of the president who appointed them thereby making it difficult for the Commission to exercise autonomy in discharging their duties.
This has resulted to a lot of biases where some polling centres/units are laced with electoral malpractices and the results of those centres are still declared in favour of the President.
